The woman on the right is dressed in Nara period to early Heian period clothing (roughly 700-900 CE). During the Nara period, Japan was heavily influenced by Tang era China, and imitated many aspects of their clothing, makeup, and hair.

Now, the woman on the left could be wearing the ensemble of a modern bride, but the ensemble of a modern bride is based on the formal clothing from roughly 100-150 years ago, so seeing as how she's standing next to a woman in Nara period clothing it's likely she's dressed merely in costume as well. I know Kyoto has a Kushi Matsuri, a festival dedicated to the iconic hairstyles that were created over Japan's 1000+ year history, it could be Nara has a similar event and they were models for it. A local temple or shrine may have been having a historical event as well.

It's cool to see them together, it's a bit of a time warp :). The photo is also laid out well.
